In the two-year EU-funded project Creating public spaces - best practice in the re-use of confiscated assets (ISEC, Nr. 4000005284) German and Italian partners develop models of civil society-reuse of buildings confiscated from criminal groups. Basis for this work are the experiences with such a system which has been successfully in place in Italy for many years. Comparative legal research, civil society networking, international exchange and the collection of best-practice examples are the focus of the project work. The aim is to create a comparable system of empowerment of civil society also in Germany.
The project is being carried out since 2015 by the Regional government of Calabria (lead-partner), the association Antigone - Osservatorio sulla 'ndrangheta (Reggio Calabria), the foundation Amadeu Antonio (Berlin), the association Echolot - Projekte für demokratische Kultur, gegen Mafien e.V. (Berlin), and the universities La Sapienza Rome and Humboldt Berlin (Chair of penal law, Prof. Dr. Martin Heger).
